I know I am not the only one who has been noticing that while I’m sitting in class there’s a cold to the left, a sneeze to the right and someone blowing their nose in front of me. ‘Tis the season for the common cold, the dreaded flu, and ailments that you don’t necessarily have a name for. So, what do you do?
As most of us already know, antibiotics are not always the answer. Not only do they kill bad bacteria but good bacteria as well. This in turn can lead to a weakened immune system. The immune system is the key in fighting a cold, the flu and illness in general.
Some people never get sick. Someone could cough all over them and they will walk away unphased. Then there are those of us that can’t so much as be in the same room with someone who’s sick because we will be bed bound with a tissue stuffed up our nose and Vicks Vaporub smelling up the place.
There is help and it’s relatively inexpensive. As written earlier, the better your immune system the less likely you are to become ill. Vitamin C is one of the best techniques for fighting a cold. Why do you think your mom always gave you orange juice when you were sneezing and miserable?
1,000-milligram vitamin C capsules every few hours increases interferon- a chemical that fights off viruses. Plus, vitamin C decreases inflammation throughout the body. It is truly a wonder vitamin for all ailments and is great at improving the immune response.
Another popular vitamin for cold and flu is zinc. It too has anti-viral properties like vitamin C and is essential for the immune system. Zinc lozenges are gaining popularity because they decrease the length of time one has a cold, especially if used at the first sign of a cold. But beware, too much zinc can actually decrease immune function. They are also known to cause upset stomach when used too much.
I have not personally noticed a benefit from zinc lozenges, but I swear by multi-minerals, which generally contain zinc. Multi-minerals once again boost the immune system and regulate proper metabolic functions in the body.
Some people take a multi-mineral and then eat poorly. Diet is a big part of warding off illnesses. Eliminate junk foods and milk products when you have a cold. Milk increases mucous, which you don’t want when you have a runny nose.
One of the most popular herbs for the common cold or flu is echinacea. Echinacea destroys bacteria and increases white blood cells, which then migrate to where the infection lies. Echinacea has been known to help herpes, influenza and other viruses. It comes in capsules or in drops that can be taken three or four times a day.
If you happen to be sitting next to someone in class who looks a little green and is blowing their nose all too often, get up and sit somewhere else. It may seem rude, but it’s better to be selfish and not sick.
Wash your hands, eat well, take your vitamins and get the proper amount of sleep. And when mom tells you to do something, do it. Unless, that is, she’s sick, then run out of the room as quick as possible. It may be rude but it’s better than being sick.
