Each semester, Ctrax, a digital music service, launches multiple artist promotions in which universities affiliated with Ctrax can participate. Earlier this fall, a Temple senior was the winner of one such promotion.
Erica Gill, a business and management major, won two tickets to the Justin Timberlake concert in New York City. Erica was also able to see artists like Three 6 Mafia, T.I. and Timbaland perform.
Some promotions allow universities from across the country to enter, and some promotions are offered only to specific campuses. According to Laurie Rubenstein, a Ctrax representative, these artist promotions allow students the chance to win prizes such as free concert tickets and trips to different cities to meet artists backstage.
Gill was allowed to bring a friend with her to the concert in New York. They were given hotel accommodations overlooking Times Square. Gill said her experience was surreal and exciting at the same time.
“When I got the call that I won, I was screaming in the middle of the street because I had never won anything before.” Gill said. “It was a thrill; I couldn’t believe that I was only 10 feet away from Justin Timberlake.”
Promotion opportunities are made available through the Ctrax Web site. Rubenstein said Ctrax, which is utilized by 75 colleges and universities, has other artist promotions planned for the fall.
Ctrax offers more than 2 million tracks downloadable tracks. Students can also watch music videos and listen to approximately 50 radio stations.
“We recognize that college students are passionate about music and we want to provide them with a legitimate source,” Rubenstein said. “Students do not have to worry about where the music is coming from. We recognize a need and we try to get students as close to the artists that make the music. That is why we have the different promotions.”
