Peabody Hall will house the Tyler School of Art students who wish to live in campus housing, even before the school’s full transition to Main Campus is complete.
Freshmen entering Tyler will be expected to move in at the start of the Fall 2008 semester and commute back to the art school’s Elkins Park campus for a semester until the classroom facilities on Main Campus are completed, which is slated for Spring 2009.
The new Tyler building is being strategically built to adjoin Presser Hall, home to the Esther Boyer College of Music, and one block down from Annenberg Hall, which houses the School of Communications and Theater. The goal is to facilitate the collaboration between the art students.
The new facility is set to be completed late in the fall, and classes will be in session in the new state-of-the-art building for the spring 2009 semester.
Though this commute might cause some inconvenience to the young artists, accommodations are being made to help them with this commute, like the new shuttle stop being put in front of Peabody Hall.
“The reason that we have recommended Peabody Hall for the spring semester is for the proximity to the building and transfer routes from the shuttle back to Tyler during the semester,” housing director Michael Scales said.
Scales said the basement of Peabody Hall will be converted into studios that will be “comparable to the studios at Tyler.”
Upperclassmen making the transition to Main Campus will have housing options in The Edge.
Scales said that the number of Main Campus students who will be able to live in Peabody will depend on how many Tyler students plan on moving into the residence hall.
“Temple’s campus is already congested as it is,” said Christine Lee, a junior entrepreneurship major. “I think that the city is a more attractive place for Tyler students to be, but [Temple] should expand Main Campus with more classrooms and eating areas.”
Scales said he does not anticipate any problems with capacity because Peabody Hall, which houses 286 students, should be large enough to house the Tyler students who intend to live on campus.
Painting major Hind Ghazzawi said the move is quite disappointing because she, like most of her friends at Tyler, appreciates the rustic look of the campus. She also added that there are too many people on Main Campus.
“I feel like I’m in my own little world at Tyler,” she said, “Besides, parking’s going to be a b—- at Main.”
