Our last issue for this academic year has arrived. Considering one of the only new topics we’d like to cover is relaxing by the beach, we’ll take a look back at a few notable events, give our take and argue what should happen next.
Arguably one of the biggest controversies this school has ever faced was John Chaney’s lapse of judgment in sending in a “goon” to rough up Saint Joseph’s players during a February game. Though President David Adamany still needs to formally talk to Chaney about next year, he said a few weeks back that no one in the University other than Chaney himself would stop him from coaching next fall. Good. Chaney deserves to lead the team he’s done so much for, and should leave on his own terms when he’s ready.
Sticking with sports, the administration will hopefully enact a stricter approach to reporting the grades of athletes to the NCAA from now on. Considering a former employee flubbed the grades in Temple’s last report and led the association to wrongly believe that a number of Temple’s teams were performing below average when they weren’t, officials need to take greater care when the reputations of students are at stake.
Obviously, women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley should be applauded for everything she has done for the image of this University through her professional presence in both leading her team to the NCAA tournament and being an outstanding member of the Philadelphia community. We hope she stays around North Broad Street for quite some time, bypassing inevitable offers she’ll be given to leave Temple for other programs.
Before we begin sounding like ESPN, politics also ruled the headlines this year. Temple students contributed to a three-year upward trend in turnout for Temple Student Government elections.
Hopefully students will carry their interest in student affairs to next fall, when a “A Stronger Temple,” will lead our student body. The slate claims they’ll make TSG more visible and more accessible, which is a promise we’d like them to keep.
