The Temple golf team finished its season this past weekend with a third-place performance in the Atlantic 10 Men’s Golf Championship held at Penn National Golf Club in Fayetteville, Pa.
Xavier took the team title for the second time, playing to a combined three-round, five-player total of 841 strokes. Rhode Island came in just ten strokes back, with the Owls a distant third. Temple’s total of 883 strokes was nine better than fourth-place Dayton.
Xavier also took in individual title, with the Musketeers’ senior Tim Donovan going wire-to-wire for the tournament victory. Donovan led after one round with a 67, then followed that up with a 64 and a 66 to finish nine strokes ahead of second-place Michael Sims of Rhode Island.
Donovan’s 154-hole total of 19-under-par 197 is an Atlantic 10 record. Sims, a native of Bermuda, was the defending champion.
Temple’s best finisher was James Chan, who fininshed in sixth place with a 0ne-under-par 215. Chan was the best finisher in the competition among freshmen. His scores in each round were 72, 70 and 73.
He was joined on the leaderboard by Temple’s Chris Bartolacci, who ended up in 16th place with a seven-over-par 223.
The rest of the scoring players for Temple were Mark Watt with 226, Robert Whiting with 226, and Sean McCafferty with 231.
Another third
The Temple women’s tennis team also place third in the Atlantic 10 Championship, beating Xavier 4-0 in the third-place dual meet this weekend.
Massachusetts, seeded second going into the tournament, overtook top seed George Washington in the championship final by a 4-2 score. GW beat Temple to advance to the final, while UMass beat Xavier.
That set up the match between the fourth-seeded Owls and the third-seeded Musketeers.
Temple was able to pull the mild upset, starting with danira Penic’s 6-0, 6-0 victory over Emily Senich at first singles.
Other Temple victories came at third singles—where Lara Ercegovic beat Beth Abraham 6-2, 6-0—and fifth singles—where Tanja Zecic defeated Tracie Fraufelder 6-1, 6-1.
Temple got wins at first and third doubles as well.
Men’s tennis honors announced
St. Bonaventure sophomore Vili Nurmi nabbed the honor as the A-10’s most outstanding men’s tennis player. George Washington nabbed the other two major honors, with Matt Hane named most outstanding rookie performer and Michael Bates tabbed as the conference’s coach of the year.
Temple had one honoree, with senior first singles player Krishane Pillay, a native of South African city Johannesburg, made the Atlantic 10’s all-conference team.
