Message to military: No turning cheeks

When the World Trade Center was bombed eight years ago, we as Americans used our trial by jury method of justice to send a message that terrorism against Americans would not be tolerated.

We again used our version of justice following the bombings of our embassies abroad, and more recently after the attack on the USS Cole in Yemen.

As the events of September 11, 2001 have so graphically shown, American justice has failed.

After the attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center, which left three buildings in the economic complex reduced to a smoldering pile of ash and concrete burying possibly thousands of dead Americans, it is time for revenge.

Our reaction must be swift, and above all, severe.

Once it is determined who is behind this tragedy, which should not too long given the pure size of the operation and number of people who must have been involved, they must be made to suffer. No trial, no jury, just exceeding pain and terror, on par with what millions of Americans went through, watching as our countrymen were burned alive in those buildings. The pain and helplessness we felt watching on live television as United Airlines flight 175 crashed into the south tower, less than 20 minutes after American Airlines flight 11 careened into the north tower. The horror of watching people choose certain death by jumping from as high as 80 stories up, rather than being engulfed in smoke and flames.

We must send a response so strong that no other government or militaristic faction would dare attempt such a brazen act of violence against Americans. We have the greatest military strength this planet has ever seen, and it is time we use it.

This attack was not just an attack against the people in those buildings, or a symbolic strike against our economic and our military headquarters. This was an attack on our very way of life. For the foreseeable future, if not the rest of our lives, many of us will shudder at the sound of a plane flying overhead, fearful that it will shortly be impaling itself into the nearest skyscraper. Our government and businesses across the country shut down in response to the attack, partially in mourning for those killed in the explosions, but also out of fear that the next target could be the very place we stood watching the horrific scene.

For too long now, in the face of terrorism, America has turned the other cheek, preferring to let our civilized brand of justice deal with some of the most uncivilized acts of violence ever undertaken. We must not make the same mistake again.

It is time to use our military might to retaliate against those responsible for this tragedy. It is time America stands up to terrorists with an iron fist. It is time for revenge.
