Temple celebrates its Hispanic heritage

Hola muchachos y muchachas! Get ready for a fiesta of grande proportions. That’s right, it’s time to celebrate the 11th Annual Latino Heritage Month.

Temple takes great pride in presenting numerous cultural events from Sept. 26 through Oct. 26.

For the next few weeks our campus will be chock-full of Latin pride, beginning with live music at the Bell Tower on Sept. 26.

The film “Guantanamera” will be shown in Tuttleman Hall from Oct. 1-3, and “Mi Vida Loca” from Oct. 8-10.

Anderson Hall will feature various lectures with Latin-themes, including “Latin America & the United States: A Look at the Future” with speaker Fernando Gonzalez. Also, speaker Angelo Falcon will present “A View of Guatemala with Words and Pictures” and “Latino Presence: Growing United.”

There will be student discussions entitled “Latinas En Accion,” “Living With Aids” and “Where Have All The Latino Men Gone?”

The Liacouras Center will hold an open house for Latin American high school students on Oct. 14.

On Oct. 18, Rock Hall will host a Hispanic Gala Night with guest artists Maria Luisa Jamez, Emiliano Pardo Tristan, Raymond Taylor, Evelyn Luise, and poetry readings by Hiram Aldarondo and Agnes Money.
Lectures on “Latinos in Business” with speaker Rosita Saez and “How the Latino explosion will affect the business environment in Philadelphia and the Tri-state area” with panelists Myrna Toro, Guillermo Salas Jr., Nueva Esperanza and Judge Nelson Diaz will be held in Speakman Hall.

Gladfelter Hall will also host lectures on “Migration and the Development of Latino Philadelphia” featuring Victor Vazquez and “Latino Press in Philadelphia: The Role of Latino Newspapers in Philadelphia” with Will Gonzalez of Al Dia newspaper.

Annenberg Hall will feature”Screening” and “Work” by Latino students sponsored by the SCAT and FMA departments.

To bring the celebration to a close, there will be concerts in several locations on campus, including Rock Hall’s concert featuring Maria Del Pico Taylor and guest artists. Outside the Student Center there will be a performance by the Temple Latin American Ensemble. Mitten Hall’s Latino Dance Contest will conclude the month-long celebration.
