Sometimes, a dream is not enough.
Since September, The Temple News has been publishing twice a week. This was the beginning of an effort to bring the paper back to daily publication. Temple is a community of nearly 40,000 students and employees – larger than many small towns. This school deserves daily coverage of news, sports, culture and all the other things that make a community vibrant.
Since twice-weekly publication began, the newspaper has been able to bring timelier stories to Temple, and more of them. We have received compliments from journalism faculty, employees and, most importantly, other students about the improved quality of the paper.
Now these steps forward are being forced back to where we were a year ago. Beginning today, The Temple News will again be printing only once a week, on Tuesdays.
Last summer, The Temple News expressed its intention to switch to twice-weekly publication. In order to do that, we needed permission to overspend our budget. This is because the University advances The Temple News money each year, and we pay it back with revenue that our student-run business and advertising staff generates.
We were led to believe that the paper would be allowed to overspend its budget under the condition that the extra expenses are covered by additional revenue. Now, the University has told us that we cannot use this revenue – revenue that we generate – to cover the extra expense of printing twice a week. Unfortunately, we never got this agreement in writing. Lesson: Always get everything in writing.
The Temple News is working hard to find a solution to this situation. In the meantime, we have little choice but to publish once a week.
All of your favorite sections will still be in the paper. In This City has been renamed Out and About and will appear with the Temple Living section.
Despite the return to printing once a week, we will continue to supplement the print edition with our Web site, www.temple-news.com. The site is updated regularly and will feature special online-only content. We encourage you to sign up for our free e-mail updates to stay informed about your university.
