Three days after the excitement of learning Pennsbury’s Lavoy Allen had verbally committed to the men’s basketball team, the Athletic Department announced senior Wayne Marshall will sit out the season.

Marshall, a 6-11, 285-pound center, elected to sit out the season to make sure he is healthy and academically eligible to participate in the 2007-08 season.

“We are all supportive of Wayne’s decision and hope that he is able to come back next season healthy and academically sound,” coach Fran Dunphy said in a statement.

Marshall, along with junior guard Mark Tyndale, had been declared academically ineligible for the first semester. Dunphy said at last month’s Atlantic Ten Conference Media Day that Marshall, a two-year starter, was not practicing with the team because of physical issues related to the dizzy spells that hindered him last season.

Marshall averaged 7.2 points and 4.3 rebounds per game last season. He ranked second on the team with 22 blocks, despite missing the season’s first eight games with dizzy spells.

But the news wasn’t all bad for the Owls last week.

Allen, a 6-8, 215-pound power forward, joins Martavis Kee and Michael Eric as the third member of Dunphy’s recruiting class of 2007.

As a junior last season at Pennsbury, located in Levittown, Allen averaged 12 points and nine rebounds per game. Rutgers, Saint Joseph’s and La Salle had expressed interest in Allen, according to scouting Web site Rivals.com.

Kee, a 6-3, 185-pound guard, averaged 23 points and four rebounds per game as a junior last season at Saint Thomas
Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.Eric, a 6-10 center from The School at Church Farm, in Paoli, is a two-star recruit, according to Rivals.com.

Per NCAA rules, Dunphy is not permitted
to speak about recruits until they sign a National Letter of Intent. The weeklong National Signing period began last Wednesday.
