Extend the Philadelphia Big 5 to spring sports, for Temple’s sake. The Owls spring sports have a Big 5 record of 16-3. The biggest surprise of the teams would be softball.

After finishing in second place in the Atlantic 10 in 2001, the softball team has showed no signs of last season. That is until this past week.

The Owls are now contenders. The team is riding a seven-game winning-streak with all of its wins coming at the hands of Big 5 schools.

The revitalized team has been on a tear at the plate and on the mound and now sits comfortably in a second place tie in the A-10 East with a record of 16-20, 6-3.

Where this sudden spurt of play has come from, I don’t know, but during the winning-streak the Owls have cut down on errors and have increased run production.

Temple has been riding the bats and arms of both veterans and newcomers. In the mix is junior pitcher Liz Naughton who pitched a two-hitter in a 2-0 win over Penn yesterday.

Junior Christine Harris is last week’s A-10 Player of the Week after belting two homeruns against LaSalle. Throw in shortstop Aida Esquer, who was the A-10 Rookie of the Week at the end of March, and you have a team staggered in experience, but equal in capabilities.
