An early morning shooting left one female student in critical but stable condition and a man dead after what university officials are calling a “domestic dispute.”
Former Temple student and football player Shawn Walker entered the lobby of Vivacqua Hall at 7:30 a.m. on Sat., Feb. 1 and shot third-year student Cori Miller with a .38-caliber revolver before shooting himself in the head, said Philadelphia police.
Miller, 21, was rushed to Hahnemann University Hospital with gunshot wounds to her eye and chest. She is listed in critical but stable condition, said hospital officials.
The 21-year-old Walker was pronounced dead at Temple University Hospital, said University officials.
Walker was Miller’s ex-boyfriend, according to Philadelphia Police. University spokesperson Harriet Goodheart said the shooting may have been the result of an argument.
Miller was on duty as a campus safety service representative when the shooting occurred. She is also a Resident Assistant on the Kardon Building’s seventh floor, which houses freshmen. Residents declined to comment.
Luis Lumpris, a junior Criminal Justice major who played football for Temple with Walker, said Walker suffered from manic-depression and was receiving treatment for the condition.
“[Walker] was a really nice person,” he said.
According to the 2001 football media guide, Walker was a strong safety from Deptford, NJ that appeared in six games on special teams in 2000.
Vivacqua was closed today while police cleaned the crime scene.
It is unknown at this time why Walker stopped attending classes.
Temple police are not releasing any more information pending an ongoing investigation.
