The women’s tennis team lost to Richmond 4-3 on Friday afternoon at the University of Pennsylvania.
The match was played at Penn because Legacy Tennis Center was not available. The Owls fell to 1-5 (0-2 Atlantic 10 Conference), while the Spiders improved to 2-3 (1-0 A-10).
The Owls started off the match on a good note, winning the doubles point. Juniors Alicia Doms and Jordan Batey won the first flight 8-6 against freshmen Anna Abidías-Morales and Katya Salas. In the second flight, sophomore Rebecca Breland and junior Yana Mavrina defeated sophomore Melissa Kandinata and senior Alexandra Smyth 8-6. Freshman Minami Okajima and sophomore Ama Osei lost 8-6 in the third flight to freshman Emily Gitman and junior Elizabeth Sims.
In the first singles flight, Mavrina fell 6-4, 7-5 to Kandinata. Doms won in the second flight, defeating Abidías-Morales 6-4, 6-1.
“Alicia Doms had a great day today,” coach Steve Mauro said. “She beat one of their top players in singles.”
Breland defeated Sims 6-6 (9-8) in the third flight. The match was retired early because Sims sprained her ankle. In the fourth flight, Osei lost 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 to Salas. Batey was defeated in the fifth flight by Gitman 3-6, 7-6, 13-11. This was Batey’s first match after suffering from chest congestion.
“Jordan got cleared by the trainer today, so she played,” Mauro said. “I think she [felt] the effect of playing today.”
In the sixth flight, Okajima fell 6-4, 6-3 to Smyth. In an exhibition match, junior Carly Bohman defeated sophomore Georgina Pons Cano 8-3.
The Owls are next in action against Georgetown at Legacy on Wednesday, February 13 at 11 a.m.
