Several members of the women’s tennis team competed at the Hofstra Fall Invitational over the weekend and expectations were particularly high for sophomore Alicia Doms, who had the top seed of the tournament.
In all, four players were brought to the invitational. Freshman Rebecca Breland earned the third seed and although they were not seeded, freshman Ama Osei and junior Agnese Rozite also competed.
The tournament started last Friday with doubles action.
Breland and Rozite received a bye in the first round and then lost 8-5 to junior Monika Graff and freshman Carolina Zanotta from New Jersey Institute of Technology. The Owls’ duo went on to win the consolation bracket title with a 9-7 victory over Concordia’s senior Clara Catanzano and junior Yuliya Plevaco.
The other Cherry and White doubles pair of Doms and Osei won their first two matches, advancing all the way to the semifinals. The pair did not advance any further, as they were defeated 8-3 by the eventual champions sophomore Jana Luste and senior Nina Mayevska of NJIT.
“We’re kind of experimenting with doubles, trying out some different things,” coach Steve Mauro said. “I feel like we performed fairly well overall.”
In the singles part of competition Doms advanced all the way to the semifinals. There she suffered a loss in three sets 7-5, 2-6,10-8 to fourth seeded Graff.
Although Osei lost her first match, she had some success in the consolation round. She advanced to the consolation championship where she lost to Luste 6-3, 1-6, 10-7.
Both Rozite and Breland made it to the quarterfinals. Breland lost to Ksenia Kuzmenko from NJIT 7-6, 7-5. Rozite lost to 2 seed Elena Ivanova from Hofstra 6-3, 7-5.
The Temple women’s team will be finishing up fall play with their next meet at the Inter-Collegiate Regional Association Championship, which takes place at Old Dominion on Oct. 21-25.
“We’re not sure who we’re bringing yet,” Mauro said. “But we’ll figure it out, [ITA] should be a great test for us.”
