Katz pledges largest donation in university history

The $25 million pledge was made during a surprise announcement Wednesday night.

In a surprise announcement Wednesday night, trustee Lewis Katz made a $25 million pledge to the university, the largest single donation in Temple’s history.

Katz, who is part of the group that owns The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News and philly.com, was being honored by the Fox School of Business with the 2013 Musser Award for Excellence in Leadership when he made the surprise announcement.

“The evening was intended to honor Lewis for his exceptional leadership and entrepreneurial success,” President Neil Theobald said in a statement.  “Not surprisingly, he reflected that honor right back on Temple with this historic gift. We are immensely grateful for his most generous pledge.”

Katz did not specify how the donation would be used.

Katz has been a member of the Board of Trustees since 1998 and serves as the chairman of the board’s Athletics Committee. He also sits on the boards of Temple Health System and Fox Chase Cancer Center, and is the  former principal owner of the New Jersey Devils and New Jersey Nets.

Katz received his bachelor’s degree in biology from Temple in 1963.
