Volleyball unable to stop Cards

The Owls fell to conference-leading Louisville on Friday night.

Despite the biggest crowd all season, the volleyball team lost to conference leader Louisville in straight sets on Friday night.

Temple (15-7, 6-4) did not have enough to take down the powerhouse  Cardinals (15-7, 10-0). Louisville remains undefeated in the league winning the three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-18.

Coach Bakeer Ganes said he appreciated the support of the fans..

“It was an unbelievable atmosphere in the gym tonight,” Ganes said. “I want to thank everyone who came out to see us play. The band did an awesome job the entire match, everyone was so into the match and it was great to see. I just wished we played better for our fans.”

Randi Ewing and Maya McClendon led Louisville with 10 kills apiece, while Ewing also recorded five blocks. As a team, the Cardinals were strong at the net with 12 blocks to Temple’s five.

Jennifer Iacobini led Temple with seven kills and recorded just a single error. The offense was balanced for the Owls, with a lot of players chipping in. Five players got between four and seven kills. Sandra Sydlik notched a double-double, her fourth in the last five matches, with 26 assists to go with a team-best 13 digs.

“There is a reason Louisville is 10-0”, Ganes said. “They are not only physical but they are fundamentally sound. They have a good mix of Seniors and underclassman. They have even gotten stronger as a team since the last time we played them a month ago.”

Louisville jumped on Temple from the get go, out blocking them and playing really good fundamental defense. They won the first set 25-15.

“Louisville dictated the match from the start”, Ganes said. “They controlled the match and we never really had a shot. We really fought hard until the end and I am proud of the team for that.”

Temple will now look to rebound from this loss on Sunday afternoon as they take on Cincinnati in a home match-up.
