This time of year, many people feel the need to serve the community or give thanks in some way. For some, this gives them a warm, fuzzy feeling in their hearts. For others, it gives them a sense of purpose.
On campus, there is an organization that has a sense of purpose all year round. It is Temple University’s Community Service Association (TUCSA).
One of TUCSA’s recent projects was making a quilt out of T-shirts. The T-shirt quilt idea came to Melanie Crumbia, president of TUCSA, as she was brainstorming with one of her co-workers. They were trying to think of something to do to help someone in need. They decided to make a quilt out of T-shirts, and give it, along with a basket of food to a homeless family.
Originally, the quilt was going to involve just Temple student organizations. Then, Crumbia said that more Temple students became so interested that they donated their own stuff. Everyone owns T-shirts, so why not contribute to a good cause? If anything, it is a good way to get rid of them.
Now, they have enough T-shirts to make three quilts. TUCSA’s plan is to sew the quilts together in the atrium of the Student Center. They want to get people to see what they are doing to get them interested and involved. After they are finished sewing, they plan to give one quilt to a homeless family, one to a family in the Norris Homes and one to another organization in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.
