Mellisa Wilson said she believes a sense of community depends on the character of neighbors in a particular community.
“In my neighborhood, everyone watches out for each other,” Wilson, 35, said.
“We make sure to call each other if we see someone who doesn’t belong or is causing trouble,” she added.
Wilson said the community works together to keep the block clean, and that if anyone needs anything, especially if it involves helping each other out with meals, her neighbors won’t hesitate to help.
“We literally go above and beyond for each other,” she added. “If they needed anything, they’d let me know and vice versa.”
Wilson, her husband and her five children live near Girard College, at 19th and Ingersoll streets. However, they will not be living there much longer.
“My kids are getting bigger and we need more space,” Wilson said.
She added even the Temple students, who occupy two apartment buildings across the street from her home, are always kind and courteous.
“We don’t get any problems from them and they seem nice,” she said. “They keep to themselves and they keep their part of the block clean.”
“That block is full of good people who care about one another, and I’m going to miss it when I leave,” Wilson added.
