FENCING

The fencing team swept the competition at Duke last Saturday, defeating No. 19 North Carolina, No. 14 Duke, Johns Hopkins, MIT and Brandeis in a six-team meet. The No. 13 Owls improved their record to 19-5.

The Owls won the Foil title, finishing with a 37-8 record in the event. Senior captain Jenna Remmert had an almost flawless performance. She finished with a 14-1 record in Foil.

Sophomore Samantha Myles was perfect in nine Foil matches, while senior Maryanne Forsythe and freshman Nina Gernes also posted strong results in Foil. The duo finished 9-5 and 5-2, respectively.

The Epee unit placed second to host Duke with sophomore Marla Nacey’s impressive 11-3 mark. Freshmen Melissa Forsythe, Kaitlyn Uckert and sophomores Brianna Ferrara and Ninah Bell also contributed strong performances.

The Owls also earned second place to Duke in Saber competition, led by senior Keri Ecker’s 11-4 record.

WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS

Due to severe winter weather conditions, the women’s gymnastics team’s meet – intended to take place last Sunday – was postponed. The meet’s rescheduled date has not yet been announced.

Earlier this week the team suffered a narrow 187.475-186.975 loss in a dual meet with city rival Penn. Junior Jillian Kornett earned the only individual victory for the Owls with a 9.625 on vault.

Temple was victorious on beam (46.600-46.375) while Penn won the other three events. Its best event finish came on vault, with a 47.250 on apparatus. On bars, the Owls scored a 46.650 while Penn logged a 46.750. Temple’s worst loss came on floor exercise, finishing 46.475 compared to Penn’s 47.075.

Senior co-captain Sarah Leibowitz and freshman Natasha Crawford tied for second on the bars with 9.525 performances. Noelle Moore earned second place honors on beam with a 9.525 effort. Kornett earned the highest score for the Owls, finishing third on floor with a 9.425. She also won first place on vault with sophomore Desiree Meredith coming in second with a 9.575. Liebowitz, Temple’s lone all-around competitor, finished second with a score of 37.550.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Senior guard Khadija Bowens earned her first Big 5 Co-Player of the Week honors for the week of Jan. 30.

Bowens averaged 15.5 points and 5.5 rebounds while leading the nationally-ranked Owls to two wins. Outscoring their opponents, 144-90, the Owls topped Richmond, 65-46, and defeated Duquesne, 79-44.

Bowens scored 15 points, pulled down seven rebounds and had three assists in Temple’s victory over the Spiders. Later in the week, she netted 14 of her 16 total points in the first half against the Dukes.

Thus far, Bowens is averaging 10.0 points and 4.1 rebounds per game and has dished out a team high 72 assists. With Bowens’ effort, the Owls are currently 17-5 overall, 8-2 in the Atlantic Ten Conference, and 3-0 in the Big Five.
