The Philadelphia Fire Department responded to a chemical spill on the fourth floor of Beury Hall near the corner of 13th and Norris streets around Monday night. One student was involved and taken to an area hospital as a precautionary measure, said Charlie Leone, acting executive director of campus safety services.
The involved student was able to walk out of the building. Officials said the spill was contained to room 441, where the incident occurred.
A TU Alert was issued at 7:12 p.m. reporting the incident. The fourth floor was entirely evacuated but the other floors of the building remained open with classes continuing on unaffected.
The section of 13th street between Norris Street and Montgomery Avenue was closed from automobile traffic due to a large number of emergency responder vehicles parked there, including fire trucks and multiple ambulances.
A final TU Alert was issued at 8:41 p.m. that announced the area was all clear.
In July 2013, the Philadelphia Fire Department’s Hazmat team was called to Beury Hall due to a triggered fire alarm on the first floor. A suspicious discolored fluid coming from the ceiling was later found to be water leaking from a hose on the second floor, a false alarm. The incident lasted almost two hours.
