The month of October is upon us, meaning it is actually appropriate to bust out all those damn Halloween decorations K-Mart and Rite Aid have been hawking since mid-August. And thanks to this wonderful pagan holiday we got coming up, the next 27 days will be awash with spookiness and dementia that sick minds like myself just LOVE. That said, here are my top three ways to best get your freak on this season:

Cult Thriller Sundays at The Colonial Theater
This quaint little one-screen movie house in Phoenixville will show a different cult classic every Sunday at 2 p.m., starting with Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho on Oct.7, The Exorcist on Oct. 14, French Connection on Oct. 21 and finally, Rosemary’s Baby on Oct. 28. Additionally, there will be an 11:30 p.m. showing of Psycho on Oct. 6 to kick the series off. As a side note: right down the street from the Colonial is the diner where part of the original Blob was shot. Now why is not that included in the series? Go to www.thecolonialtheatre.com for directions and info

Terror Behind The Walls at Eastern State Penitentary
I used to work at the ESP haunted house during my first year at Temple, and as much as the production has been commercialized since then, I can still tell you the building is undeniably friggin’ creepy — just get a load of the tiny cells and dingy hallways. Did you know that back in the day, most prisoners were locked up in solitary with only a copy of the Bible? Many went insane, died and are likely still wondering around those off-limits cellblocks.
Weekends through Oct. 21, 24 – 31. Call (215) 763-NITE for details.

Type O Negative at The Trocadero
It’s a Philly staple… Type O at the Troc on Halloween night! You don’t even need to like these campy metalers to enjoy yourself; just show up for the atmosphere and help all those mopey goth kids feel more at one with the rest of the world.
