Even a first place finish isn’t enough for Margo Britton.

“I am happy about winning, but this was a down weekend,” Britton said. “I judge myself on the distance of my throws and not necessarily on how I do against my competition.”

Britton took top honors for the Owls at the 49th Colonial Relays last weekend, where she came in first place in the shot put with a throw of 14.72 meters. The performance gave the Owls 10 points and a 17th place finish in the 38-team field at the college of William & Mary.

Britton also captured second place in the discus throwing event with a distance of 46.70 meters.

The men’s team finished 18th in the 41-team field.

“It was tiring,” coach Eric Mobley said. “We had our ups and downs, but finished strong on the last day.”

Matt Kacyon led the men’s team with a second place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Kacyon’s finished with a IC4A qualifying time of 9:04.33.

Two other men finished with IC4A qualifying times – Alex Izewski and William Kellar. Izewski finished seventh in the 10,000 meter race with a time of 30:58 and Kellar finished eighth in the 800 meter run.

Distance runner Jenna Dubrow placed 10th in the women’s 3,000 meter relay with a time of 10:11.

Senior Gabe Pickett continued his return from knee injury, as he placed ninth in the long jump with a distance of 6.53 meters and sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 14.10 meters. Pickett said that the weekend was not up to par compared to other weeks, but feels like he is returning to form.

Personal bests came for Ryan Debarberie and Will Maltin as they came in sixth and 16th with times of 15:17 and 15:37.

Saturday was highlighted by junior Kiersten LaRoche taking second place in the women’s high jump with 1.55 meters, and three relay teams finishing in the Top 10.

The first relay team consisted of Hollis Coleman, Kenya Gaston, Demeshia Davis and Michelle Davis Timothy, and finished sixth with a time of 4:07 in the 1600 sprint medley. Coleman, Gaston, Demeshia and Davis also finished sixth in the 4×400 meter relay with a time of 3:49.

Elijah Hargrove, Jamal Williams, Joseph Ho and Adam Hassan combined for a fifth place finish in the 200 meter relay with a time of 1:30.

Finishing up the events were Sean McAneney, Dimitri Drossopoulos and Frank Connor who placed seventh, eighth and ninth in the javelin throw.

The Owls return to action on April 12 at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational at the University of Miami.
