Ms. Dynamite combines luscious vocals with hard-edged rhymes, and people will be quick to label her a British Lauryn Hill.

Yet Dynamite’s style mixes Nelly Furtado and Lady Saw into an original product out of a rough upbringing.

Her first statewide release, A Little Deeper, is a unique blend of pop, dancehall reggae and R&B containing refreshingly conscious subject matter and spiffy production.

A Little Deeper – a perfect album title – displays Dynamite’s ability to reach beyond the ordinary relationship fodder and inject her compositions with sharp commentary.

The way she wraps pleasant-sounding curses into “Put Him Out” and “Natural High” ensures that this chick ain’t no Spice Girl.

Her ruggedness is most prevalent on tracks like “It Takes More,” where Dynamite dissects materialistic suitors.

Duets with Keon Bryce (“Anyway U Want It”) and Kymani Marley (“Seed Will Grow”) showcase Dynamite’s smooth vocal talents in a less angst-ridden manner.

While only gripping the mic on two songs, Dynamite’s dancehall-style raps are machinegun quick.

Comparing Ms. Dynamite’s versatility and promising lyrical material to anyone doesn’t get deep enough into what makes her first record truly explosive.

She definitely sets it off.
