Explorers blank Owls, 1-0

Explorers redshirt-junior goalkeeper Larisa Zambelli stopped all eight of the Owls’ shots on goal to earn the shutout victory.

The Owls took 13 shots during Sunday’s game, eight of them on goal. None got past redshirt-junior goalkeeper Larisa Zambelli, who made eight saves to help La Salle earn a 1-0 victory at McCarthy Stadium.

The Explorers took the lead in the sixth minute when senior forward Marykate Bateman found the back of the net. Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Nash saved  junior forward Kristin Haugstad’s shot, but could not stop Bateman’s rebound try. Nash made three saves in the second half to keep the Owls in the game.

The Owls could not overcome the early deficit despite generating chances. Temple had three shots on goal in a two minute span in the first half, as well as a chance to tie the game in the 85th minute, when  Zambelli made her seventh save of the game, stopping junior forward Gabriella McKeown’s chance. Senior center midfielder Elaine Byerley led all players with five shots, three of which were on goal.

The loss drops Temple to 1-2 on the season, with losses against city rivals Drexel and La Salle. The Owls will finish a stretch of three consecutive road games when they face Rider University on Thursday.
