After winning its opening four games of the season, the field hockey team (4-8) is currently mired in an eight-game losing streak, including three consecutive losses in the past week.
On Sept. 29, the team traveled to Lawrenceville, N.J., where it was shut out by Rider, 3-0. The Broncs got three first-half goals with senior midfielder Lindsay Rajeski getting one and junior midfielder Virginia Egusquiza providing the other two. Junior goalie Rebecca Lotito recorded a shutout win without making a single save.
The Owls would lose to another New Jersey opponent after losing 5-2 to Monmouth on Oct. 2 at the Muhawks’ So Sweet a Cat Field. The Muhawks took a 4-0 halftime lead off goals from senior midfielder Morganne Firmstone, freshman defender Alex Carroll and sophomore forwards Kimmy Baligian and Michelle Pieczynski.
In the second half, junior midfielder Kaylee Keener and junior forward Bridget Settles would provide both goals for the Owls, but it wasn’t enough. Baligian would strike again for the Broncs’ fifth goal.
On Sunday, the team returned home to Geasey Field, where the team lost to Bryant, 2-1. The Bulldogs got two early goals from sophomore forward Elise Driscoll and junior forward Courtney Landi. Freshman defender Molly Doyle would have the Owls’ lone goal.
Settles has been the team’s leading scorer this season with nine goals and two assists. After her, senior forward Taryn Nichols has three goals and two assists and Doyle has three goals.
Up next, the Owls will kick off Atlantic Ten Conference play on Oct. 8 against Saint Joseph’s. On Oct. 10, the team will have its annual Alumni Day game against Penn. Both games are at Geasey Field.
