Women’s tennis loses fifth straight with loss to Buffalo

Sophomore Rebecca Breland picks up Temple’s only point in third flight in 6-1 loss.

The women’s tennis team fell 6-1 to Buffalo Saturday afternoon in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Owls (1-7, 0-2 Atlantic 10 Conference) have now lost five matches in a row. The Bulls stay undefeated at 5-0 (0-0 Mid-American Conference).

In singles play, junior Yana Mavrina lost 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 to junior Tanvi Shah in the top flight.

In the second flight, junior Alicia Doms fell to junior Miranda Podlas 6-4, 7-6 (1).

Sophomore Rebecca Breland got Temple’s only point with a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win against sophomore Laura Fernandez in flight three.

In flight four, junior Jordan Batey lost 7-5, 7-5 to senior Tamara Markovic.

Sophomore Ama Osei fell 6-2, 6-1 in the fifth flight to junior Anamaria Candanozza.

In the sixth flight, freshman Minami Okajima lost to freshman Gopika Kapoor 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-4).

In the doubles top flight, Batey and Doms fell 8-2 to Shah and Podles. Mavrina and Breland defeated Candanozza and Markovic 8-1. Buffalo clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 victory in the third flight. Fernandez and junior Marta Stoyanova defeated Osei and Okajima.

Stoyanova also defeated junior Carly Bohman 6-3, 6-2 in an exhibition match.

Coach Steve Mauro and players were not immediately made available for comment after the match.

Temple has another match Sunday at St. Bonaventure. The match will start at 11 a.m.
