LIVE: Updates from the Presidential Debate Media Filing Center

The Temple News will have live updates from the Media Filing Center and Spin Room at tonight’s debate.

All eyes are on Philadelphia tonight at Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump face off in their first debate leading up to November’s presidential election.

Tonight’s debate is the first since President Joe Biden announced he was suspending his campaign after a disasterous perfomance at a debate against Trump on June 27.

The Temple News’ Editor in Chief Samuel O’Neal will provide live updates from the Media Filing Center at the Philadelphia Convention Center as events unfold tonight. Follow this page for the latest all night long.

LIVE UPDATES:

11:41 p.m. — Shapiro now taking questions in the spin room. Says he was impressed with Harris’ performance and that she baited Trump into rambling on. “That’s not what the American people want to hear,” Shapiro says about Trump’s “rambling.”

11:37 p.m. — Surprise appearance from Donald Trump is over. He answered roughly five or six questions and that walked out of the spin room. Massive scrum disperses and Shapiro seems ready to answer questions from the media on the other side of the room.

11:30 p.m. — Eric Trump when asked by a reporter how his father did tonight — “He did phenomenal. He definitely won.”

11:28 p.m. — DONALD TRUMP has entered the spin room. Massive media scrum ensues. At least 30% of the 900 reporters in the room are huddled around Trump in the back corner of the spin room by the entrance.

11:24 p.m. — Loud and intense media scrum as JD Vance wraps up a live hit on FOX and speaks to the media. Some scattered rumors that Donald Trump could make an appearance. Shapiro still speaking with CNN, has yet to answer questions from the rest of the media.

11:21 p.m. — Gov. Gavin Newsom back in the spin room. Robert F. Kennedy, Tim Scott, Josh Shapiro, Eric Trump, Vivek Ramaswamy, Roy Cooper all here as well.

11:13 p.m. — Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz is in the spin room. Says Trump easily won the debate, harps on Harris’ inability to speak on actual policy.

11:08 p.m. — The debate has officially wrapped up, and there is a frenzy in the spin room. Gov. Josh Shapiro is here.

10:06 p.m. — First intermission of the debate, and members of the media rush to the spin room. Robert Kennedy Jr. just quickly sped through but did not take questions.

10:00 p.m. — Suprise of the night? Donald Trump tells David Muir his ABC coverage of the Israel-Hamas war has been “very good.”

9:42 p.m. EST — Trump: “I’m speaking now… does that sounds familiar?” Even the media filing center breaks out into chatter after that one. Harris smiles and nods.

9:32 p.m. EST — David Muir has live fact checked former President Donald Trump twice in the first 30 minutes of the debate. The CNN-hosted debate between Trump and President Joe Biden was not live fact checked.

9:11 p.m. EST — Kamala Harris shakes Donald Trump’s hand as they take the state at the Consitituion Center and we are under way. Every media member seated and spin room empty.

9:09 p.m. EST — Nearly every media seat is filled as the debate gets underway.

8:33 p.m. EST — Vivek Ramaswamy, Robert Kennedy Jr., Roy Cooper and Gavin Newsom are here in the spin room.

8:11 p.m. EST — Florida Sen. Rick Scott is now in the spin room serving as a surrogate for former President Donald Trump. More representitives for both campaigns expcted throughout the night.

7:33 p.m. EST — North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper have both made appearances in the spin room. Gov. Josh Shapiro is still expected later tonight.

6:56 p.m. ESTPennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro will be in the spin room following tonight’s debate. He is currently in Old City at a Harris-Walz watch party. Shapiro is expected to be the only Pennsyvlania surrogate in the spin room tonight.

6:33 p.m. EST Members of the media are starting to file into the media filing center at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The Temple News will have live updates all night long.
