On March 30, Temple Student Government organized a rally, followed by a march to City Hall in response to Gov. Tom Corbett’s proposed budget cuts.
Joined by students from Penn State Abington, students rallied at the Bell Tower before the march. Jobs for Justice, the Every Mother’s a Working Mother Network and representatives from Philadelphia Area High Schools were also present.
Arlene C. Ackerman, superintendent of the School District of Philadelphia, addressed demonstrators about Corbett’s budget cuts and urged citizens to take immediate action.
Additional speakers encouraged student action.
Colin Saltry, TSG senate president, said he was shocked at the attendance and the support from the student body. Five hundred people had signed up to participate in the event and more than 1000 showed up, Saltry said.
Pat Albright, a volunteer from the Every Mother’s a Working Mother Network in Germantown, Pa. marched with students from the Bell Tower and urged emphasized the need to stand together in this important issue.
