Flea Market Madness

Sept. 14

Free.

5:30 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Most people love a good flea market, but the unfortunate thing about them is that they usually occur early in the morning after a long night of drinking, studying, or whatever mayhem you kids get into. Well luckily for those of you who love perusing tables of antiques, knick knacks and clothing, Flea Market Madness will be taking place at the Starlight Ballroom. This evening flea market will take place inside, so rain or shine you’ll have the chance to pick up some goodies. The bar will be open, so you can grab a drink and some food to fuel you while you shop for bargains, or fight old ladies for lamps. And for you sports fans, televisions will be playing whatever game is on that day, if there is one. Doesn’t seem like a bad way to spend a Wednesday evening and you’ll still have some time to study.

Sept. 15

Philly’s fashion scene is not the best — I mean, we’re on GQ’s list of worst- dressed cities. But despite some of our city’s less fashionable folk, there are still those who live and breath it. If you couldn’t make it to NY fashion week,  check out SA VA’s fall fashion show and community street fair. The eco-friendly brand will be showcasing 30 pieces from their fall/winter collection. There will be a series of three mini collections: workday pieces, SA VA’s Saturday collection, and SA VA signature looks. The show’s theme -Rediscovered Roots — is all about SA VA returning to their roots: draping, flattering silhouettes and specialty hand dying. Some pieces will be available to purchase that evening, others will need to be pre-ordered. The show is not going to be the only entertainment. Surrounding neighbors will participate in outdoor vending and there will be a DJ and musical performance by Carolyn Lin.

So, if you haven’t heard of Jack Wills, here’s the story. Jack Wills is a UK company that targets university students, creating British inspired collegiate clothing for the fashion savvy student. No, I don’t mean ugly Victoria Secret sweats with words on the butt — I mean sharp, tailored clothing. The brand has everything from clothing and loungewear to housewares and jewelry. Jack Wills didn’t cross the Atlantic until 2009, so there are not a lot of stores in the US yet. There are 11 stores in the US, including the one that will be opening its doors in Philadelphia on Walnut Street, and they’re holding a launch party to celebrate. Attendees will enjoy drinks, food and goody bags. Plus, the pink and blue Land Rover and Royal Guards will be sure to catch anyone’s attention if you get lost on the way.
