COLIN KERRIGAN TTN Inside Chinatown’s New Harmony, tasty meat-free meals priced perfectly for a college student’s budget, await.

Tucked inside what appears to be a building that has been abandoned for months is a vegan, Chinese-food lover’s dream.

Serving some of the best faux-meat meals in Philadelphia, New Harmony Vegetarian Restaurant is a little-known restaurant on the edge of Chinatown, whose menu features mock meat in all its dishes, such as shrimp fried rice, sweet-and-sour chicken and lemon beef.

As the restaurant’s name suggests, New Harmony’s atmosphere is one of the most relaxing in the city – the perfect place to wind down after a stressful day of classes or during a study break. Plus, the menu’s prices are fit for a college student’s budget, with nothing priced more than $15. And all the items are well-portioned.

“I paid about $9 for the sesame chicken. There was more than enough food. I had to make my husband eat some of it,” said Sharon Hardy, a – patron from South Philadelphia.

The most popular dish is the dim sum. The $12 all-you-can-eat platter, which comes with soup, an appetizer, choice of dim sum and dessert, has earned rave reviews.

“It’s great. It’s a lot of food, and you can try pretty much anything you want. It’s cheap, too, for the amount of food you get,” said Paul Hamberg, a sophomore at Drexel University.

The restaurant also has a VIP room where friends can gather for karaoke and good food.

So the next time you’re in the mood for heaping piles of food at college-student-friendly prices, stop by New Harmony for vegetarian Chinese fare that’s nothing short of harmonious.

  1. I wonder why people would go for mock meat instead of real meat. If the temptation of eating meat is so strong, why not just go for real meat. I would rather eat vege instead.
