Authentic Mexican food and adventurous margaritas make Cantina Los Caballitos a popular South Philly hangout for locals and hipsters alike.

“The Cantina” (as most people incorrectly and affectionately call it) features an interesting variety of vegan options, as well as adventurous meat options on its diverse menu. If you’re an adventurous eater, then Los Caballitos may be a great destination for you. It features items such as goat and mahi-mahi tacos but also offers classics like chicken nachos and beef burritos.

With such an extensive and flavorful food menu, Cantina Los Caballitos also offers a large variety of tequilas and margaritas like prickly pear and black currant. It also has a fair selection of microbrews and classic lagers. If you desire a spicy beer to go with spicy nachos, consider Rogue Chipotle Ale, a spicy, hoppy ale that leaves your taste buds sizzling. Try a shot of Sauza Gold Tequila and a can of ice cold Tecate beer for just $4.

Los Caballitos’ interior is decorated with burnt sienna walls. The walls of the bathrooms are lined with old Spanish movie posters, making the inside feel cozy yet festive. The jukebox has a great selection of music ranging from Prince to Modest Mouse.

In nice weather, it is not unusual to wait in long lines for a table outside, where you can sit along Passyunk Avenue, sip margaritas and enjoy sweet fried plantains. Just don’t expect the servers to be as sweet as the pomegranate margaritas.

Good For: Authentic Mexican food, delicious margaritas and warm weather.

Bad For: Friendly service and people looking to avoid heartburn.

Did you guys choose to review Cantina because of their lax carding policies? It certainly couldn’t be because of the crappy and overpriced mixed drinks or the Chi-chi’s for Hipsters vibe.

WTG Temple News, you should promote underage binge drinking more often!
