Coming off an incredible comeback against Hofstra on Wednesday, Temple had a simple strategy heading into Saturday’s road game against the University of Maryland Baltimore County: Keep the energy going.
But the Owls lost 11–9, despite keeping the game close.
Temple was able to keep pace with UMBC to open the first half, with goals from the Retrievers’ junior attacker Abby Wilson, senior midfielder Kristen Bilney and junior midfielder Alyssa Semones matched by goals from senior attacker Jaymie Tabor, sophomore midfielder Nicole Tiernan and sophomore attacker Rachel Schwaab.
But the Retrievers were able to pull away toward the end of the half, with three-straight goals from Semones, Bilney and redshirt junior attacker Ali Carpenter.
Going into the second half down 7–4, the Owls found a way to even thing back up, with three more goals from senior midfielders Lea Britton and Kelly Syphard, and Tabor, who completed the hat-trick.
But just like in the first half, UMBC pulled away, with four-straight goals from Wilson, Carpenter, Bilney and Semones.
Down 11–7, with less than five minutes left, Temple kept pushing. Syphard scored with 3:50 left to play , then scored again with 2:12 left to complete the hat-trick and make it a two-goal game.
However, the Owls weren’t able to pull off another comeback with the time they had left.
Temple outshot UMBC 20–16 and took 15 of 22 draw controls, but the point in which the team lost some of those draws came back to bite them.
“We controlled the draws for the day, but there was a period of time where we lost a few in a row,” coach Bonnie Rosen said. “And to give up the goals at the end of the half was really a bit of a momentum killer for us.”
Temple (3–6) will return home to open Big East play against Connecticut at 1 p.m.
