Neither a blowout loss to the third-ranked team in the nation, nor a seven-day layoff seemed to have any lingering effect on the women’s basketball team when it faced Western Michigan Sunday.
In the first half, that is. The second half, however, was a different story.
The Owls returned to action at Western Michigan with a 72-68 victory over the Broncos.
The last time the Owls were on the court was last Sunday when they were beat by No. 3 Maryland, 64-46. Temple only scored 18 points in the first half.
Against Western Michigan, the Owls (5-6) came out quick in the first half and led, 35-25, at halftime. It was the guards show in the first half: sophomore LaKeisha Eaddy and senior Ashley Morris shot a combined 8-of-12, scoring 21 points.
The Broncos shot only 23percent in the first half but gave the Owls a scare in the second half.
Western Michigan (3-7) cut the lead to 42-40 with 13:15 left in regulation. The Owls responded with an 11-0 run and looked to have locked up the victory, but the Broncos scored seven in a row and chipped away at the Owls’ lead.
Temple only made two field goals in the last 2:52 and relied on free throws to sneak out its second road win. Morris made four free throws late and the Owls held on by that four-point margin.
Eaddy and Morris were the only Owls in double figures with 23 and 19 points, respectively.
Jasmine Stone, making her first appearance of the season after sitting out the first semester for academic reasons, scored five points with eight rebounds in 20 minutes.
